Heluva Good! Fall 125 Race Weekend Updates

NOTE: This is what we posted throughout the weekend on the front page of EastSeries.com throughout the NHMS weekend. If you were at the track or not able to get to the site over the course of the weekend, this will give you some idea of how the event progressed from our first arrival on the grounds Thursday morning until we packed up to leave Saturday afternoon. This is probably best read from the bottom up.

Engines have been fired

9:25 a.m. - We've now made the move up from the infield media center and the Cup media and/or PR reps whining about how these NHMS weekends are just too crowded with too many races and it always rains... now we're upstairs ready to bring you live updates of the rescheduled Heluva Good Fall 125. Cup cars are working the track to make sure we have a good surface on which to put on our show, and we should thank them for their doing their part to make sure the weekend's races get off to a good start. We have a scoring monitor, race broadcast monitor, Coca-Cola, and comfie chairs so we should be in good position to do an adequate job of race coverage. With orders to say nice things about Jamie Hayes, we have our mission in front of us. So enjoy your bowl of Golden Grahams and join us in half an hour for flag-to-flag coverage.

8:07 a.m. Saturday - We're back for a bonus day here at the Magic Mile. A couple hours away from green flag, we're happy to report that everybody's back, there are no scratches. Also, nobody has to give up his starting spot due to post-qualifying adjustments or anything like that. The biggest development from yesterday was the revealing to Carl Edwards that we have a dog named after him. We weren't going to say anything but Mary Hodge let it slip and I understand he was amused by this revelation. He wasn't told that the dog in question is a bit of a doofus that refuses to grow up or learn basic commands, but that's probably just as well.

4:32 p.m. Friday - There hasn't been any announcement, but a revised schedule for Saturday shows that there will be a 125-lap Camping World race on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. We assume that means there won't be one run today.

4:27 p.m. - Not a good sign: the safety crews are making their way down pit road picking up their fire extinguishers and putting them on a trailer, presumably because they won't need to be on watch anymore today. We await what we imagine will be the announcement of plans to run this race tomorrow.

3:37 p.m. - They just announced the qualifying cancellation here in the media center, adding that the Camping World Series race is still on, pending weather.

3:35 p.m. - Cup qualifying is cancelled, but we don't know what that means for us little people.

2:26 p.m. - We're back from the autograph session, which was well-attended by both drivers and race fans. That's the good news. The bad news is that as it was winding down, though, sprinkles started and they haven't stopped yet. All on-track activity has been stopped and we're in a holding pattern until more information becomes available.

11:27 a.m. - It's still overcast but Craftsman Trucks are on the track for an interminable 80-minute practice while various Cup drivers are making uninteresting statements in their press conferences here in the media center. The best statement of the weekend came from Steve Park after qualifying (he was addressing the media along with polesitter Peyton Sellers and third-place qualifier Eddie MacDonald):

"One thing most people don't realize but I just realized myself is that you've got three independent teams sitting up here in first, second, and third," he said. "It's a credit to all our organizations. Racing against Joe Gibbs and DEI and the other Cup teams that are out there, to have three guys like ourselves, in independent teams, run up front and qualify as good as we did in the Camping World Series is a credit to our teams and our team owners. By enduring all the costs that we see inflating in this sport, it's getting expensive to even run in the Camping World Series, my hat's off to ASM and my team and Waste Management and Eddie's team. We're independent people and we do the best we can with what we've got, and we're here talking to you guys so it's a credit to all our teams."

10:22 a.m. - We've posted Kate Claffie's photos from Thursday's activity Here. When we got here this morning there was a note at our workspace saying that NHMS' Director of Special Projects, Ron Meade, is ill and will not be at the track this weekend. This will be the first event in the history of the speedway that Ron will miss. We'll pass along wishes of a full recovery to him and hope to see him back here when we return next summer.

8:25 a.m. Friday - We're back in action at the Magic Mile where nothing is going to be happening, East Series-related at least, for another few hours before the garage opens at noon. The highlight of the afternoon will be the autograph session held at the Camping World display outside the infield tunnel starting at 1:30 p.m. The other highlight is the running of the Heluva Good Fall 125 at 4:40 p.m. In the meantime, we'll try and get some work done here regarding audio and photography and hopefully by the time things really get going here, the temperature will break freezing.

4:45 p.m. Saturday - Peyton Sellers will have the best seat in the house tomorrow afternoon when the Camping World East Series takes the green flag for the Heluva Good Fall 125 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. Sellers posted the fastest time in Coors Light Pole qualifying on Friday with a fast lap of 30.124 seconds (126.437 MPH) to snag the pole away from Steve Park (30.177). Eddie MacDonald and Brian Ickler make up the second row. Championship leader Matt Kobyluck starts thirteenth (30.564) with closest points pursuer Jesus Hernandez eleventh. Full qualifying results are Here.

3:10 p.m. - We're five minutes away from the first car taking to the track in this afternoon's qualifying session.

2:50 p.m. - Qualifying order: 12 99 61 15 63 3 72 30 9 1 50 03 81 8 7 14 4 96 80 35 55 21 37 11 52 39 2 38 71 40 41 13 88 18 26 44 16 45.

2:10 p.m. - Tech has opened and teams are starting to shuffle in the general direction of getting their cars through inspection in advance of time trials, which take place at 3:15 this afternoon. One team that may not make it in line in time is Jeffrey Earnhardt's No. 8 effort, which is changing engines. A team member said that they pulled a filter and it was full of metal; sounds like a good enough reason to swap powerplants to me. No. 45 Ryan Black's Taurus is undergoing repairs after a trip into the wall in practice, with damage primarily done to the right front corner.

1:25 p.m. - Showing the form he used earlier in the year to win a pair of races, Brian Ickler followed up his Mansfield win with a top-of-the-chart run in practice at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. He's three-tenths faster than second-best Peyton Sellers, with Joey Polewarczyk, Steve Park, and Alex Kennedy rounding out the top five. Full practice results are Here.

12:31 p.m. - We're back in business.

12:21 p.m. - The red flag is showing over NHMS at this moment as the No. 45 of Ryan Black has crashed in the turn 1-2 end of the track. He was reported to be out of the car OK but many pieces of clean-up apparatus has been dispatched to that end of the Magic Mile. Practice will resume once the track is ready and will go to 1:00 p.m.

10:00 a.m. - Entry list has been posted Here.

9:51 a.m. Thursday - We're ready for the stretch run to the end of the Camping World East Series season with preparations starting for tomorrow's Heluva Good Fall 125. We're comfortably ensconsed in the infield media center of the Magic Mile and ready to start another weekend of coverage of everything going on here - at least, everything concerning our little nook of the weekend. There's 38 cars on the entry list posted in the media center - Charles Lewandowski is a scratch after suffering transportation problems - and we'll have that posted any minute now, followed by a trip through the garage area to verify said list.
