GREEN FLAG: 71 rockets off with the lead as the outside line stacked up. 44 to second, then 40 inside 18, then 19 Penny's back, panic averted 10 is being pushed but only as far as the garage. He can return if his issues get resolved. We're getting the one-to-go sign. 39 Delaney is apparently having radio issues The 10 is not off to a good start as he's pointing the wrong way and stalled near the inside pit wall closely approaching the entrance to turn one. A tow truck is about to push him off. Looking over the track, we see Kate doing the photo thing in turn two near the tunnel, so, while we don't wish bad things to happen during this race, if they must, hopefully they'll happen in that general area. Penny's not back from the lobster bake yet so she'll miss the start unless she's just down the hall. Two to go till green. Engines have been fired. Due to time constraints, the race will now be 100 laps. Drivers going to the back: 39 (transmission), 36 96 (engine), 12 37 (unapproved changes) 5:23 p.m. - NASCAR estimates that we will be racing in 20 or 30 minutes. The track is bathed in sunshine so we are optimistic.
4:39 p.m. - Rain has showed up at the Magic Mile as sprinkles have started in turns 3 and 4, spreading towards 1 and 2. It would be safe to say that we are in a holding pattern. Stay tuned. 3:19 p.m. - We're a couple hours from green flag here at the Magic Mile and there's precious little to report. Mike Johnson's car has its engine replacement completed and it's on pit road at the tail end of the field. The drivers meeting is going on as we speak while Cup qualifying is on the track; we go 125 laps once the big guys finish time trials. Tune back in to this space for lap-by-lap coverage. 8:46 a.m. Friday - It's shaping up to be a great day for baseball here at the Magic Mile. Our day is getting off to a good start with a couple Pop Tarts and a tall can of NOS, but there's little to do as the Camping World East Series garage will not open until nooon, with the exception of Mike Johnson's team being allowed to start working at 8 a.m. 11:20 p.m. - Photos from Thursday by Kate & Alan Claffie have been posted Here. Back to the track bright and early Friday morning.
3:06 p.m. - In less than ten minutes, qualifying will be starting here at the Magic Mile. We'll have car-by-car qualifying results as it happens. I don't have a qualifying order handy so we're all winging it. 12 Hernandez and 5 McRae will only get one lap each for being late to tech.
1:42 p.m. - Kate just checked in from the garage area, which is about as far away from the media center as one can get and still be within the boundaries of the NHMS property, and reports that 36 Corey LaJoie has also blown up an engine. We talked to Mike Johnson earlier and he didn't sound optimistic about being able to get his car going, as he has no spare spec engine and the changes required to fit one of his old Ford engines make that change all but impossible. He's making the rounds trying to find someone who will loan him a spec engine, though they seem to be in short supply. 37 Alex Kennedy has gotten into the outside wall and the hammers are swinging at the Spraker Racing hauler. Back here, we're punching in practice times and should have them up in a matter of minutes. 1:10 p.m. - We now know that Mike Johnson is the one who blowed up near the end of practice. The field was given a few minutes of practice before the session was called off, but it's over now and we're awaiting the results. 12:57 p.m. - We're just a few minutes from the end of today's only practice session but under a red flag. One car dun blowed up good heading into the first turn and they're cleaning up the track. Whether they add a few minutes to the end of the session or not remains to be seen. We have no scoring monitor working in the media center but radio chatter has Matt Kobyluck as one of the cars to watch. 10:35 a.m. Thursday - After a few weeks away we're back in action, heading under the starters stand where Billy Ryder is holding up two flags signifying two to go. We're parked in the media center at New Hampshire Motor Speedway where we need a map to figure out where things are, since we haven't been here in a year and they've changed a thing or two in the ensuing time. We have to figure out who's here, who's not, when's lunch, and some other trivia. Practice starts at 11:30 and if we're lucky we'll have an entry list by that time. |
