Mohegan Sun NASCAR Camping World Series 200 Raceday Updates

NOTE: This is what we posted throughout the day on the front page of EastSeries.com throughout the Lime Rock weekend. If you were at the track or not able to get to the site over the course of the weekend, this will give you some idea of how the event progressed from our first arrival on the grounds Friday morning until we packed up to leave Saturday evening. This is probably best read from the bottom up.

restarting lap 76. Some had protested the 3's getting the free pass but with the caution coming out with 11 to go, he's apparently OK. This has led to some sarcastic radio chatter from the 11 Hernandez team.

40 Kobyluck warned by crew chief Perry Waite about 18 Davis' aggressiveness.

We're inside ten to go, under caution. Replay shows 99 Chew spinning inside the Esses with smoke coming from under the hood, but he expressed some anger or frustration towards 8 Earnhardt. When Chew spun, also getting involved was 89 Moloney.

left front fender easily comes off - well, not that easily, of the 15 as 3 gets the free pass. 99 Chew is out of his car so it must be kaput.

CAUTION #7 99 stopped on track. 4 31 and 15 tangled in the last turn as there was concern for oil. 15 pits with damaged left front fender

4 spins off last turn while 99 is stopped on the side of the track.

GREEN lap 68: 40 18 now 44 inside 18, 18 takes second, 44 gets third then 61 37

One to go at the line so restart happens on lap 68. Running order: 40 61 18 44 37 11 1 4 99 31 8 15 35 30 16 96 75 89 71 52 7 88 39 3 26 32

3 returns to race. Pitting: 32 under hood and 3 back for more fixings.

CAUTION #6: 3 into tire wall on uphill. he drives away but has heavy left-side damage

working lap 65: 40 61 18 37 inside 44, 37 gets the spot but 11 inside 44, 44

35 still not paying his penalty. working lap 63: 40 61 18 44 37 11 4 1 99 31 8 75 3 30 15 35. 35 is no longer on the black flag board, he's paid his penalty though nobody earned any cool points taking that long to get it fixed

working lap 62: 40 61 18 44 37 11 4 1 99 31 75 8 3 30 35 15 16 96 89 71

working lap 60: 18 inside 11 for third, makes the pass at the bottom of the hill. 40 leads 61 18 pass 44's inside 11, now 37 inside 11 before 11 can fall back in line

working lap 59: 32 has sparks coming from the car when he turns, they're looking at it. 40 61 11 18 44 37 4 99 1 31 35 75 3 30

working lap 58: lots of black cars up front: 40 61 11 18 44 37 4 99 1 31

GREEN FLAG lap 55: 11 looks under 61 but falls back, 40 drives away

going one to go so restart on lap 55

running order: 40 61 11 44 18 37 4 99 1 35 75 30 96 31 89 3 71 88 7

pitting: 15 (gas) 32

15 Ickler spins out of the lead in West Bend, no contact from 40.

GREEN FLAG lap 51: 15 leads 40 but only by about a foot. Then 61

visiting pit road: 52 26 16 (he had a flat tire). There's a rock on the track that needs to be removed. Once that's out of the way, the general consensus is that the track will be ready to race. One to go till racing, restart will be on lap 51 of 82.

16 and 39 are getting service on pit road to their detriment (pit road is not open). 40 Kobyluck says the track will be ready in two more laps.

3:39 p.m. - The red flag has been lifted (1 hour 16 minute red flag). Cars are rolling on the track.

Engines have been re-fired. They'll take to the track doubled up for the restart to finish the drying process and then it's back to racing.

Stop me if you've heard this one before, but it's a great day for baseball here at Lime Rock Park. The sun is shining and the crowd is returning to the hillside. We've enjoyed a little rare mid-race quiet time hanging with some drivers, watching Marc Davis offering Slim Jims to everyone, but it's just about time to get back to business. We're keeping our fingers crossed that the TV will resume broadcasting when the race resumes racing, but we're pretty confident that we'll be fully back in business once things get loud.

They say that the safety trucks will be leaving the track soon and the race cars lining up behind the pace car two-by-two for a couple laps to finish the job, and then we'll be back racing with roughly a thirty-lap or so shootout.

3:24 p.m. - Drivers are getting back in their cars and we'll be hearing loud noises before too long.

2:50 p.m. - We're still waiting out the rain which varies between hardly at all and "uh oh" from minute to minute. Radar looks encouraging, we're sitting under blue skies and there are wreckers on the track starting the drying process. We remain optimistic.

Red flag is out, with scoreboard showing 48 laps, at 2:23 p.m.

Drivers will be instructed to stay in the car and the red flag period to be "short and sweet".

Cars will be coming down pit road the next time by and the race stopped.

Official Emil says the rain is real light at the pit exit and is getting better rather than worse. More opinions are being solicited from the drivers and teams as we wait for this rain to pass.

working caution lap 44, running order: 15 40 61 11 44 18 37 4 99 16 75 1 30 96 35 31 89 39 32 52 3 71 88 7 8 26. 40 Kobyluck says the back part of the track is pretty wet but it's good around the front. NASCAR has dispatched its safety truck to take a look around.

To the groans of the huddled masses in the media center, the restart has been called off.

going one to go so restart happens on lap 44 while 40 Kobyluck says the track is wet.

going one to go so restart on lap 42 with an eye to the skies. 61 Olsen reports the downhill is "nowhere near safe" - covered with speedy-dry while his windshield is covered with water. Restart has been waved off.

lineup is being discussed as we count down towards halfway. They're reporting rain but it's expected to be brief.

81 is hooked up for a tow. Lineup: 15 40 61 11 44 18 37 4 99 16 75 1 96 35 31 39 32 52 3 89 71 88 7 8 26

CAUTION #4 lap 39: 81 crashed to the inside of frontstretch. He got bounced around and shot off to the right into the inside wall, leaving debris about the area. We've seen lightning in the air but nothing wet.

GREEN lap 38: 15 inside 40 as

running order: 15 40 61 11 44 18 37 4 99 1 75 30 16 35 96 31 32 39 81 52 88 3 71 88. 8 has come off pit road, and 7 26. Going green next time by as the 17 is being pushed back. There's talk that the track cleanup is not adequate but we're still on one to go, putting the restart at lap 38

pitting should be just for those with trouble now as all the teams have made their scheduled fuel stops. Thunder is heard in the distance and spectators are starting to scramble

CAUTION #3 lap 34 - 26 may have gotten loose in front of 18 and got turned around, should have been wailed by any one of a dozen cars but everyone missed him and he drove away. As Bouley drove away, the 17 came on the scene with smoke pouring out of its engine bay

working lap 34: 15 has mirror full of 40 then 61 and 26 is turned around on the uphill, and the 17 is smoking heavily and stopped.

working lap 33: 15 40 61 26 11 and 18 inside 44

26 now falls back as 61 and 40 have some ground to make up on 15 Ickler

RESTART lap 32: 15 leads 26! 61 40. Houw bout that Bouley

one to go at the line so that should put the restart on lap 32 if we can trust the scoreboard. I'm going to put the car's top up

restart waved off. Running order: 15 61 26 40 11 44 18 37 8 4 99 16 75 30 17 96 31 1 35 89 39 7 52 3 81 32 71 88

going one to go, so restart on lap 29

15 61 26 40 11 44 18 37 8 4 99 16 75 30 17 96 31 88 1 35 and dark clouds are rolling in. We might have to run and put the roof up on the Miata

pitting: 89 39 7 52 81 3 32 71

lots of talk about saving fuel on the 40's radio. Pit road will be open this time by as a tow truck and flatbed truck have entered the course.

CAUTION #2 lap 25: 27 Mattioli stuffed in the tire wall approaching West Bend. He's out of the car. 35 and 3 had been on pit road so we're not sure if they'll be given a pass or not as pit road is closed

27 is in the tire wall

31 exits pit as 88 spins in turn one ahead of him. 52 also leaves pit road. 3 is now leading, now 35 is ahead and we haven't quite figured out how or where. 1 Bayne spun off the downhill turn but is back under power

working lap 23: 31 (32) 3 35. Now 31 hits pit road along with 35, handing lead to 3 and giving 32 lead lap status. Others are probably pitting but we can't see who.

31 now has the lead with 32 between him and new second place 3. 35 put a wheel off wide in turn one on lap 21 to hand the lead to 31 Curran.

32 had pitted and came out of the pits just ahead of the leaders before the restart, and now he's goine a lap down.

15 bounced off 52 who was inside 81 entering turn one and 81 paid the price with a spin. Everyone's driven away. 40 complaining about 75

lap 19 (TV does not match track scoreboard): 35 31 3 then a ways back to 81

lap 17: 35 31 3 81 52 26 and three-wide: 15 inside 61 inside 7 and they get out of that OK

GREEN lap 16: 35 leads 31 3 81 52. 63 Salemi is out of the race: clutch

11 being put in front of the 1 as we work caution on lap 14. Debris is reported coming off the 99 car. Now it's one to go which should put the restart on lap 16

reports are that the pit road flagman dropped the green flag when told to open the pits and couldn't have it picked up and waving in time for the leaders to see it. One to go this time by as 16 just peeled onto pit road to hand 35 Park the lead. Not going back to green, not sure if it's track clean-up or lineup changes

Drivers are being encouraged to drive through the speedi-dry. On-track: 16 35 99 31 3 52 81 26 7 71 15 61 75 30 40 1 11 44 8 4 39 37 88 96 32 17 18 (who just pitted) and 89 as well as 27 who will get the free pass

40 Kobyluck was the first leader off pit road with 1 Bayne and 11 Hernandez in tow, but they'll be deep in the field

The track has been oiled down in the downhill turn so cleanup has been dispathced. Pits are open and we can't see from here if there are any takers. Now 40 says that pit road was opened after the leaders already went by 15 pitted along with 61 75 30 (lap 12) 32. Leaders now pitting (lap 13): not 18 or 16 35 99 31 3 52 81 26 7 89 71. Next on the track are those who pitted the lap before and now here come all the cars off pit road

27 gets free pass. 2 on pit road with window net down and smoke coming from car. Crew going under hood and there are reports that there is a dark line of liquid something on the track approaching pit road

CAUTION #1 lap 10 for 63 which is reporting a broken transmission

working lap 10: 63 is slow, now off the track inside the exit of Big Bend.

working lap 8: someone went off in the first turn but not badly enough to warrant TV's attention. Still 40 1 then ohhhhhhhh 18 15 11 2 8 44 16 35 4 99 31 3 52 30 and 37 inside 81

working lap 7: 40 1 nose to tail down frontstretch then all kinds of empty track back to 18 15 11 2 8 44 16 35 4

working lap 6: 40 1 approaching 27 Mattioli. 15 inside 11 for fourth and makes that pass with 2 looking as well. 27 goes down a lap

working lap 5: 18 inside 11 into 1 and completes that pass.

working lap 4: 40 1 11 18 3 15 2 8 44 16 35 4 99 31 52 30 88 81 61 37 39 7 etc. 31 is making the biggest early move

TV showing battle for third with 11 over 18 3 15 as 40 and 1 build a decent lead. 2 Lofton is moving up well to now run behind 15. 21 is out allegedly due to transmission

working lap 2: 21 on pit road, probably done for the day as it goes to the garage

green flag: 40 leads into turn one as 88 goes wide exiting big bend. Early going: 40 1 11 18 3 15 8

One to go

Pit road speed is 35 MPH, pace car will run at 45 under caution

TV is back, panic averted.

Cars are rolling, no TV yet!

Engines have been fired. No TV though so we might have to run up the hill and leave you high and dry. Might just be on commercial, so we won't panic just yet.

Internet's a hair flaky here but they're pretty good about fixing it when it blinks out. We're five minutes away. Three cars are going to the rear due to changing cars: 21 Smith, 27 Mattioli, and 71 MacDonald.

12:52 p.m.Maybe that was eight minutes until TV... they just said ten minutes to the command

12:50 p.m.Eight minutes until engines are fired

12:36 p.m. - Driver introductions are beginning here at Lime Rock Park and we're ready to bring you coverage of the eighth race of the 2008 season. Refresh this page as we do our darndest, between HDNet broadcasting and my view from the frontstretch media center, to tell you what's happening throughout this afternoon's 82-lap race.

10:10 a.m. - We're all here and ready to go with cars going through inspection, with one exception. Eddie MacDonald's car, last we were told, was making its way through the sleepy town of Great Barrington, Mass. in a little trailer. We questioned the reasoning behind switching entire cars rather than changing just the engine, but the team reported that after blowing this engine yesterday and blowing another one sky high at Watkins Glen in June, it might be more than just engine problems. The car that's on its way raced at Lime Rock last year so it's no stranger to road racing, it just won't have the months of prep time behind it. With Eddie driving, that might not be that much of an issue although he will be starting tail.

8:20 a.m. Saturday - It's a great day for baseball here at the Road Racing Center of the East. The sun is shining and we put the top down and enjoyed a brisk but fun ride to the track earlier and now we're in the media center snuggled up close to a TV set tuned to what will be the HDNet broadcast. Because of this, we'll be able to bring you live updates during the race as TV allows, which I thought would not be possible otherwise. We're a mere four and a half hours from green flag so you've got time to mow the lawn before checking in for coverage of the Mohegan Sun NASCAR Camping World Series 200 in the early afternoon.

4:56 p.m. Friday - The starting lineup has been posted Here. Time to go home!

4:23 p.m. - The rain's light here at Lime Rock but storms are on the way, and because of this qualifying will not be held this afternoon. The field for Saturday's Mohegan Sun NASCAR Camping World Series 200 will be set by points, and we'll stick around until that information is disseminated so we can post that and then pack up and head to dinner, wherever that might be.

3:58 p.m. - Since we have nothing else to do for the time being, here's a picture of Justin Lofton attempting to make a Toyota fly.

3:53 p.m. - What a difference six minutes makes. Sprinkles are falling so we're going to play the waiting game to see if qualifying will be held or if they'll throw in the towel and line up by points.

3:47 p.m. - The clouds have rolled in here at Lime Rock Park but we remain optimistic that qualifying, set to begin at 4:00 p.m. We'll cover it here, providing we can hear the times being called out over the radio after each qualifying group.

2:45 p.m. - Max Dumarey showed that we're not quite ready to give the trophy to Matt Kobyluck just yet. He posted the fastest time in the second session, ahead of Jeffrey Earnhardt and then Kobyluck in third. Full results are linked below. Jonathan Smith encountered trouble in the second session, dinging up the nose of his No. 21 Dodge. Eddie MacDonald had to be pushed in after being stranded on course, and that's all the calamity we're aware of right now. Dustin Delaney's engine change is ongoing, and deals are being hatched to get Chase Mattioli in a car for the race as his No. 27 is not fixable. Next up: qualifying at 4:00 p.m. and we'll find some way to cover it here.

12:55 p.m. - Kobyluck posted a lap time almost a full second over second place Eric Curran. Dustin Delaney is replacing an engine while there is some serious nose damage to the No. 27 of Chase Mattioli. The first practice results are linked below while we're just about to head out to shoot the second session.

10:40 a.m. - The entry list linked below has been updated with some corrections to hometowns and stuff like that.

9:30 a.m. - Right now, it's a great day for baseball. Whether this holds out over the balance of the day remains to be seen. Regardless, we're set up here in the media center of the freshly repaved Road Racing Center Of The East. We're looking at an entry list with 32 cars for 32 starting spots so unless there are adventures in practice or qualifying, there will be a full field. Dale Quarterley will make his season debut, and he's joined by Alessandro Ciompi from Italy (in a second Fast Track entry), Eric Curran (a road course ringer in the Marsh Racing No. 31).
