NASCAR Camping World Series 125 At The Glen Raceday Updates

NOTE: This is what we posted throughout the day on the front page of EastSeries.com throughout the Watkins Glen weekend. If you were at the track or not able to get to the site over the course of the weekend, this will give you some idea of how the event progressed from our first arrival on the grounds Friday morning until we packed up to leave Sunday evening. This is probably best read from the bottom up.

Matt Kobyluck pounced when Marc Davis did not come up to speed on the final restart. He went on to win as Davis wound up slowing and getting put into the fence. Jeffrey Earnhardt was second, followed by Trevor Bayne, Jesus Hernandez, and Steve Park. 12 Perez was fifth the last time the field came by at speed but he did not maintain speed as the field came around to the checker and will fall in the final order. We'll have a quick & dirty finish once the final finishing order is distributed, in the meantime, there's pictures to take and drivers to talk to.

They say that there's only going to be one attempt at a green-white-checker. Drivers have been told, or warned, that there are cameras all over the track and no funny business will be tolerated. We will go green on lap 53.

4:31 p.m. - Engines have been refired. There's talk of more weather on the way so there will be some encouragement to get this event done and over with although we imagine there will be some, um, opportunistic drivers taking advantage of the final couple laps.

4:23 p.m. - Correction to 16 Dumarey's ailment: his engine, not his transmission, let go. Either way he will not finish.

4:20 p.m. - Radio chatter says that only the second half of the Inner Loop is "damp". That should be fairly easily fixable.

4:19 p.m. - Cars are stopped on the track on the downhill run to the first turn. 3 Dillon was pushed onto pit road, no idea what's up with that car. The lineup under red: 18, 40, 8, 12, 03, 1, 11, 4, 99, 81, 35, 75, and 3 (last car on the lead lap) if he gets going. Lapped cars are 44, 39, 7, 2, 88, 25. Out of the race: 16, 23, 52, 15, 30, 37, 71, and 21. There's some reports of rain on course in turn seven which is about as far away from the brightly sunlit frontstretch as we are.

Yellow on lap 49 (2 to go), 16 Dumarey blew a transmission and oiled down the Esses. 18 Davis has lead all the way with lots of pressure from 40 Kobyluck. 35 Park cut a left front tire and had to pit, is the last car on the lead lap at the time of caution. Retirees include 23 (radiator), 52 (accident after tangling with 44 Sellers in turn one), and now 16 Dumarey. 12 Perez has been on the charge after the restart to run third behind Davis and Kobyluck, but they just told the 12 to get behind 8 Earnhardt because of the last completed lap thing although I have the pass for third at least 1.5 laps before. There are concerns about gas in the 18 as he was the first to pit earlier in the race. Word comes now that the race will be halted to clean the track so there'll be another delay before a green-white-checker finish.

One to go, green coming at lap 32

15 Ickler reports clutch problems and is now behind the wall

Radio reports that 18 Davis is not happy with how the track is, but all other drivers are ready to go. We may only go one more lap before we see green.

3:28 p.m. - Engines have been refired. We expect three or four pace laps before going back green.

3:20 p.m. - The track is about 99% dry, with just a few very small problem areas where water is stubbornly making its home in cracks where concrete patches in some turns meet asphalt. One troublesome spot is being worked on by both a jet dryer and leaf blowers, which does not make for compelling television but does encourage optimism that this race is that much closer to being restarted.

3:12 p.m. - Drivers are suited up and getting back in their cars. Kate showed me a wild photo she got on pit road with the cars parked: there is a chunk of connecting rod poking out of the front bumper of Trevor Bayne's car. Hope anyone near that car takes care not to tear a pant leg on that.

3:00 p.m. - Matt Kobyluck and Marc Davis are now touring the track in an official's vehicle to assess the track. For those who are curious, the running order after 29 laps: 18, 40, 35, 16, 8, 23, 1, 03, 11, 4, 65, 12, 15, 3, 52, 44, 39, 81, 75, 99, 2, 88, 30 (out of race), 7, 25, 37 (out), 71 (out), and 21 (out).

2:45 p.m. - we just took a wander around and things are looking pretty good. Pit road is mostly dry, which means the racetrack has to be even mostly drier. The only areas of concern, we surmise, is that there may be some puddles of standing water on the insides of some turns. The biggest question mark is Marc Davis' transmission. It was stuck in 4th gear when the race was stopped and they're hoping that it'll get unstuck with the engine off... they'll know what's up shortly after engines are refired. In the garage area, Jeff Anton was very much unhappy about being removed from the race by Nick de Bruijn, while Rollie LaChance was perhaps too proud to show off a chunk of connecting rod that used to be inside Eddie MacDonald's engine - the little dit-dots that are part of the spec engine verification system were still visible but little else was recognizeable. The photo above is evidence of the dumb things we in the Mini-Media do when faced with a long mid-race delay.

2:10 p.m. - Crews are being told to remove the covers from the cars.

2:06 p.m. - Emergency vehicles and the dryer have been dispatched to the track to start the drying process. Radio chatter says that we're staying till dark to get the whole race in if necessary.

Radar looks encouraging so I would not be surprised if we go racing again.

And now we wait.

The frontstretch is very wet as the cars have arrived on pit road.

Best scanner quote: "It's raining here like I'm taking a shower. I haven't had a shower in three or four days so it feels pretty good". Cars are being brought to pit road, stopped, and covered. Running order: 18 40 35 16 8 23 1 03 11 4 65 12 15 3 52 44 39 81 99 75 2 88 30 7 37 25 71 21

Rain is arriving and the race is just past halfway. Radio chatter says that the 18 has blown a tranny but is still showing on TV leading the field.

caution lap 27: 30 Anton was tagged by 37 de Bruijn and sent spinning into the outside wall, that car's hurt front and rear. 40 Kobyluck had just passed 18 Davis for the lead but they're putting the 18 back in the front as that lap was not completed before yellow came out. Free pass goes to 88 Lavender. 30 is driving to pits, 37 needs a tow with right front damage.

Going green this time by (lap 22) - runnin order 18 23 40 8 16 35 1 4 03 11 2 65 52 3 15 which is reporting a broken sway bar. Couple more blend line violations this caution. Every car has pitted now, we should be good to run to the finish.

99 Chew gets the free pass after being one of four cars to get nabbed with a pit exit blend line penalty (15 Ickler, 3 Dillon, and 39 Delaney were the others). 88 Lavender spun and crashed pretty hard in the first turn but continued without bringing out a yellow, car's hurt on both ends.

Yellow lap 19, 7 Duff off in gravel trap in Inner Loop. Most front-runners have made their fuel stops save for leader 12 Perez.

Frontstretch is reportedly well oiled down courtesy of MacDonald. Pits are opening to the field

pits open, 2 driver change, also 18, 52, 39. Running order: 12 40 16 35 8 4 37 65 1 44 11 15 99 30 81, 23, 03, 3, 75. Single file restats, going green this time by

We're back - first caution lap 6, 21 Smith is stopped in the Esses. 71 blew up big taking the yellow and is stopped in turn one. running order: 12 40 16 35 8 4

Going to try to watch from pit road where there's a jumbotron, which means no coverage here dangit

cars are rolling off pit road and there appears to be no broadcast on the TVs here so this may be more difficult than first thought

Craig Goess has Andy Lally standing by to jump into the Greenville Toyota Toyota at the first caution. Goess is reporting an elbow injury that may limit his road racing ability. We heard jet dryers on the track so things are looking up.

12:25 p.m. - Sprinkles started hitting drivers and crews as we sang and prayed on pit road at Watkins Glen. A shower has put a damper (ha ha!) on things here in New York State and the cars are now on pit road under covers, but with the weather conditions being what they are, once the rain is over the track should be dry very quickly and green-flag racing will happen. Stay tuned, we'll be updating here all race long.

11:45 a.m. - The drivers meeting is over and the biggest point of contention is that there will only be one scoring loop in use for this race, at the start/finish line. It's possible that someone could complete a pass - or many passes - on a lap but if caution comes out before that lap is completed, he'll have to give all those spots back. This was not a popular revelation. Matt Kobyluck lectured the drivers present about what a terrible show South Boston was and how the series should be putting on better races than that. Here's hoping this will sink in before we return to another short track. Driver's introductions are about fifteen minutes away and then we'll settle in for 51 laps of fun.

10:25 a.m. - Scratch another car from the starting lineup as No. 31 Buescher has loaded up and will not race, reporting engine problems. The remaining 28 drivers are entering this building as we speak for their drivers meeting. We took a wander over to the other side to check the view from the frontstretch stands and while it's fairly expansive, and certainly an improvement over the old stands, we'll most likely wind up watching the race on TV here in the media center with a nice cold Monster and perhaps even lunch. Since we'll be at the place where the laptop is, we'll probably update in this space as time and cautions allow.

9:45 a.m. - A quick walk through the garage showed that all but three cars are pretty much ready to race. The exceptions are No. 18 and No. 03 changing transmissions. The No. 52, well, the photo to the right, taken at 9:28 this morning, tells the story. With less than three hours to go from gaping hole under the hood to running raceable car, the Schrader Racing team is being put to the test this morning.

9:05 a.m. Sunday - We're back at the track for the third straight day and it's raceday. I don't even know if the garage is open yet, though there might already be teams in there working to replace driveline components hurt in yesterday's qualifying session. On the track right now is some small-bore sedan race that is under caution due to a four-car wreck coming out of the last turn. That'll teach 'em for trying to race four-door sedans.

7:30 p.m. - Antonio Perez is the polesitter for tomorrow's Camping World 125 At The Glen after posting a fast lap of 1:14.470, 0.247 seconds faster than second place Matt Kobyluck and a new track record. Max Dumarey was third, followed by Steve Park and Nick de Bruijn - there are four nations represented in the top five. Complete qualifying results are Here. Transmission troubles struck Marc Davis and Rogelio Lopez in qualifying, in Lopez' case before he could post a lap time. Tomorrow will be a busy day for those teams as the race is an early afternoon affair.

5:52 p.m. - Qualifying will start in about five minutes. They'll call out the best lap times after each group has finished its run, so there won't be any constant updates but rather six or seven new times added in a bunch. The fastest group goes out last so the pole will be in question until the last batch finishes its time trial laps.

5:25 p.m. - One quick item from the garage area: most cars have gone through tech but one notable exception is Jeremy Clark's No. 25, which, last we saw, had its rear end removed from the car. Don't know what's up with that but with qualifying not that far away, they're going to have to hustle to get in his qualifying group.

5:20 p.m. - The Rolex 6-hour race has just ended and Rogelio Lopez is happy as the Telmex car is in victory lane. Qualifying is set to begin for the Camping World Series at 6:00 p.m. with four groups going road-racing style. We'll attempt to do qualifying more or elss as it happens but since this is not standard oval track-style qualifying, we're not sure how times will be relayed. But we have scoring monitors here in the media center and PA announcers (including the inimitiable Al Robinson) being piped in and between the two we should have some idea of who's doing what.

1:30 p.m. - Nothing new on the news front, but if you're bored and want something purty to look at, well, we can't help you. But we did post my photos from Friday Here.

1:00 p.m. - Kate has survived a brief shower to bring us some news items from the garage area while I've been been playing with yesterday's pictures. The car count is down to 29 as the No. 89 Ford of Larry Moloney has been withdrawn after thumping the wall with the driver's side. The No. 7 Laughlin team driven by Ryan Duff is changing transmissions but may also be forced to change the rear end if the tranny does not fix what ails the Pine Branch Coal Chevy. There's the scent of Bondo dust in the garage as some are fixing accident damage - most notably the No. 81 of Jason Holehouse and the No. 1 of Trevor Bayne.

11:04 a.m. Saturday - We've arrived safely and soundly just in time for the start of the Six Hours race for one of the professional sports cars groups. They're about to get the green flag, but we're chilling indoors - maybe later we'll go out and shoot some of those. The garage doesn't open until noon and when that happens we'll go out and see how repairs are going from the various and sundry practice incidents.

TEAMS: Need a gasman? Cliff (not Claff) Cherry is available for tomorrow's race. Give him a call at 973-228-2510 to make arrangements. He's a good guy and quite experienced, and most notably gassed three separate cars in the 2006 Toyota Showdown.

7:41 p.m. - Matt Kobyluck's replacement engine was just as good - or better? - than his primary one since he put his car atop the leader board at the end of the second and last practice session at Watkins Glen. He bettered Antonio Perez, Max Dumarey, Rogelio Lopez, and Steve Park. Full results are Here. We're done for the day and will be back here relatively bright and early Saturday morning.

7:35 p.m. - Still awaiting practice times, but we do have the qualifying groups for tomorrow. Group 1: 8, 89, 2, 88, 39, 75, 52, 7, 25. Group 2: 30, 11, 1, 65, 3, 81, 44, 21. Group 3: 4, 99, 31, 23, 37, 8, 71. Group 4: 40, 12, 16, 03, 35, 18, 15.

7:01 p.m. - Word from the garage says that there was an incident during practice when Nick de Bruijn and Trevor Bayne got together on the front part of the course. Repairs are being conducted in the garage. Also, the second session ended with Jesus Hernandez winding up in the sand trap in the Inner Loop (right in front of us, don't know how we forgot to mention that) but he was towed out and drove away.

6:55 p.m. - We've completed the second and final practice session here at Watkins Glen and are now eagerly awaiting the time sheet printout. It appears that there were fewer mechanical failures or significant contact, though Larry Moloney did tweak the left front of his car - he drove it back to the garage, though. We saw numerous flat tires including one on Marc Davis' car, so perhaps debris being kicked onto the track is a factor. Matt Kobyluck made it to the track to run practice after replacing his engine while Jason Holehouse didn't; he'll see the track next evening for qualifying. We were shooting photos in the Inner Loop where the scoreboard was not functioning so we don't really even know who was fast.

3:05 p.m. - Full practice times are now up Here.

2:40 p.m. - The first practice session is over and there's been some toll taken in the form of both mechanicals and crash damage. Matt Kobyluck blew his engine early in the session and it is being replaced. Another car scattered alleged transmission debris down the backstretch; we're still chasing what/who/when/why/etc. Jason Holehouse crashed his No. 81 and was being evaluated by medical crews for heat exhaustion; he's since been released and word is that the car is undergoing repairs. We expect practice times soon: the scoreboard showed Max Dumarey fastest with Nick de Bruijn, Jeffrey Earnhardt, and Rogelio Lopez following.

12:40 p.m. - We're a hair short of an hour from the start of practice. The big news in the garage area is that Brian Ickler's rear end has been swapped out of his car and the original is now in NASCAR's hands. Not sure what the story is there but it's probably not good.

10:35 a.m. - Entry list has been revised with the latest and greatest information.

10:15 a.m. - The entry list, at least as far as we can ascertain, has been posted below. We may still have some updates to make to it before we're sure it's final, and that might happen sooner rather than later. In the meantime, it's thirty cars for 32 starting spots so drama surrounding qualifying should be pretty moot. Meanwhile, we're shooting pictures and figuring out who's who and thinking about lunch before we get ready for the first practice, which happens at 1:25 this afternoon.

8:33 a.m. Sunday - We're set up here in the mighty nice brand spanking new media center here at Watkins Glen and let's just say this place has come a long way since we were here last in 2004. Across the track is some familiar looking grandstands - we last saw them lining the frontstretch at Nazareth Speedway. We've already crossed paths with our host for the weekend and it's nice to know we have a place to sleep. Next up is a photog's meeting, then we'll be off to canvass the garage area and report back with an entry list and any other tidbits of news we might come across.
