Stafford Motor Speedway Race Weekend Updates
NOTE: This is what we posted throughout the day on the front page of EastSeries.com (and Claffie.com) throughout the Stafford Motor Speedway race weekend. If you were at the track or not able to get to the site over the course of the weekend, this will give you some idea of how the event progressed from our first arrival on the grounds Saturday morning until we packed up to leave Sunday afternoon. This is probably best read from the bottom up. 44 wins. Top five: 44 1 11 3 71. We'll have a quick & dirty finish when it's posted on the trailer; in the meantime, we're signing off Les Westerfield: "All right, let's hang on a minute here" - Bayne's winning is not a done deal I believe Andy Mitchell is pleading the case of the 44, saying the 31 slowed when he ran up on the 15 and the boot was unintentional on 44's part 1:32 p.m. - We seem to have a double-whammy here of an iffy finish anyway with it finishing under yellow, as well as possible penalties resulting from leaders spinning. They say the 1 will go to victory lane and the 44 will be removed from that space 1:31 p.m. - The jury has been deliberating for a few minutes now, we know nothing "guys, everything is held up right now, no victory lane celebration, no anything" going back to the restart, looked like 15 tried pushing 31 high but instead spun low as he made contact with 31's left rear. 15 then drove around slowly until 31 approached with the race lead, and from what it looked like here, slowed slightly till 31 was on 15's back bumper. As 31 slowed he got poked by 44 who went on to the apparent win officials' radio is eerily quiet fans are booing 44 as he stops under flagstand; 40 Kobyluck is doing a little burnout but now comes to pit road. At this time we don't know if the 44 will keep the win CAUTION: yellow-checker, race over after the field took the white. 44 wins over 1 11 3 lap 148: 15 slows a little, 31 approaches, now 31 spun off 44's front bumper as white flies, no yellow lap 146: 31 behind 15, 15 back up to speed. 44 behind 31 then 1 11 3 71 61 40 88 52 4 8 16 18 39 9 2 lap 145: 15 circulating slowly as leaders approach, could be interesting lap 144: 31 44 1 11 3 and 71 inside 40 GREEN lap 143: 15 bounces off 31 and spins off frontstrtetch as green flies, and 15 keeps going one to go at the line as the restart isn't quite settled yet. The pit party is winding down and cars are leaving the track while the Camping World Series cars remain to have their driver introductions and, in not too long, racing. 8:53 a.m. Sunday - We're back for the last race of 2008, Stafford's Fall Final. 28 NASCAR Camping World Series cars have already gone through inspection and are displayed in the track's infield in anticipation of the 10 a.m. pit party. After that, there's no warm-up show, we're the opening act. That happens at a hair after noon today. 11:21 p.m. Saturday - About to hit the sack, but before we do, we'll post Kate's photos from Saturday Here.
Qualifying order: 52 35 4 44 40 3 96 1 8 88 38 9 39 31 4126 01 71 18 99 11 30 61 21 7 2 15 16. We start at 2:00 p.m. Qualifying times will be read off on channel 7, let's find out if we have that programmed into the scanner 11:58 a.m. - Practice has been concluded here at Stafford with just one minor spin by Ricky Carmichael stopping the session briefly. Brian Ickler went out late on a mock qualifying lap and nailed down fast time with a lap of 19.426 seconds (92.659 MPH). Matt Kobyluck was second-fastest, followed by Craig Goess, Jamie Hayes and Kevin Swindell. Full results are Here. There's trouble in the pits as Marc Davis' team is changing engines, while we scratch John Salemi from the entry list as he's only here helping out Jonathan Smith and not racing himself. 9:05 a.m. - It's warming up nicely outside but it's still only 49 degrees in Anton's hauler. Other than that breaking news, the entry list is posted Here. Astute observers will notice that Ryan Duff is not in the No. 7 car as he's staying closer to home this week - conflicting reports say he's either just gotten married or had a child or something like that. Alan Purkhiser, a USAR driver, is in the Pine Branch Coal Chevrolet. Ryan Truex is in the DEI No. 8 although we've seen Jeffrey Earnhardt around carrying his uniform: that might just be for the Late Model ride he's got lined up here. Kevin Swindell is in the Gilette-Evernham Dodge, Ted Christopher's in Ted Marsh's No. 31 instantly making that car a threat to win, while Mike Olsen's behind the wheel of the No. 16 with Woody Pitkat in the team car. There's 29 cars for 30 spots. 8:35 a.m. Saturday - We've arrived at a brisk Stafford Motor Speedway for what will be the last race of the 2008 season. We've holed up in the Anton Racing toterhome which is a balmy 49 degrees inside so we're anxiously awaiting the heat of the day. It's a compact schedule for the Camping World East Series today with a 90-minute practice starting at 10:00 a.m. and then time trials at 2:00. The first order of business is to get an entry list and, most importantly, keep moving to stay warm.
