Heluva Good! Summer 125 Race Weekend Updates

NOTE: This is what we posted throughout the weekend on the front page of EastSeries.com throughout the NHMS weekend. If you were at the track or not able to get to the site over the course of the weekend, this will give you some idea of how the event progressed from our first arrival on the grounds Thursday morning until we packed up to leave Friday evening. This is probably best read from the bottom up.

Eddie MacDonald Wins Heluva Good 125 at NHMS

on restart: 71 drives away from 1, then 40 and 18 inside 3

"Let's have some fun here" overheard on someone's radio.

green-white-checker once the 12 is towed off. 55 is being difficult lining up for the restart. One to go: runnin gorder 1 71 40 3 4 18 61 55 11 63 88 39 96 15 21 30 01 16 38 52 14 2 99 80 27 etc etc

12 Perez had been seen the lap before with smoke showing from its right rear corner, it must have slid up and slapped the outside wall after the restart. Driver and crew chief from the 12 have been invited to visit with the officials after the race is completed.

lap 122: 1 71 40 CAUTION for 12 stopped on backstretch access road

lap 121: still 71 and 1 neck and neck, now they swap lanes in 1/2... 1 ahead by a bumper going to 3

lap 120: 1 inside 71, 40 3 4 18 61... 71 still fighting on the outside, dead heat down backstretch

lap 119: 71 1 40 three wide for the lead, 71 takes lead in turn 1 then goes high, 1 under him, 1 inside 71 down backstretc`h with 40 behind

lap 118: 40 1 71 3 18 inside 61, 4 11 55 63 88 39 12

lap 117: 40 1 71 inside 3, 71 takes 3rd then 3 and 18 inside 61, then 11, 63, 55

Double file restart on lap 116: 40 1 3 then 71 inside 61

61 Olsen reports concerns about his car sputtering when he cranks it hard to the right, gas could be an issue. Race control just told drivers "Make wise choices". We shall see if that is taken to heart.

15 comes to pit road to replace a flat right rear tire, and his bad day turned good that turned bad has now turned worse. They say they'll go one to go which puts the next restart on lap 116 with nine to run.

"Big Sweep" is at the accident scene to clean up some oil dry as laps wind down, 113 on the scoreboard now. Running order: 40 1 3 61 71 11 39 18 4 63 12 88 01 14 55 21 96 52 38 16 30 15 2 99 80 27 7 24 26 44 35 03 50 8 59 and 41

80 gets free pass. 99 shows damage front and rear, he's on pit road. And I think it's getting kinda dark here? 111 laps show on the scoreboard as some heavy equipment reports to the backstretch to rearrange what Ryan Duff dislodged

caution caused when 14 and 7 tangled on backstretch. 7 spun and collected 24. 7 slid down towards infield and got a pretty hard lick on a concrete barrier. 24 is out of car. Some unlikely drivers are going to get some very good finishes out of this one

40 1 3 71 CAUTION backstretch: 24 7 victims of jumbling going back to entrance to turn 2

40 rockets away from restart while 55 jumps from WAY back. 40 1 3 61 11

restart lap 107: 11 40 18 1 4 3 71 61 63 39 99 12 7 88 52 01 14 21 24 38 16 2 96 30 55 15

55 Leighton is not going to the rear as requested by NASCAR so there should be some fun coming up. He's arguing the reason for going to the rear. 15 is going to the back for aggressive driving - wow.

Going back to last scored lap so the running order is jumbled. 03 on pit road with left side jacked up. 96 pit with flat RF. 44 has been on pit road with crew under the hood. Running order coming soon

Abandoning paper scoring to score the race here. 96 is on track but beat up, right front tire down. 2 pit with 26

big wreck backstretch: 55 61 99 the biggest victims. 55 took 15 and 11 three-wide going into turn one after taking the green. 11 went way high and by the time they got to turn two it was on. 55 drove up front and said hi to 15 Ickler

44 Sellers pushed to pit road. Also pitting: nobody up front as we're going to go green on lap 101. 15 11 55 40 18 1 4 3 71 03 61 96 63 12 39 99. Pitting: 16 2 80 26 27 38

30 Anton gets free pass. 15 Ickler is most impressive considering he came from the back, in a back-up car. Imagine how good his primary car must have been.

lap 97: 44 Sellers slow on frontstretch, caution comes out as he stops in turn two

96 laps in: 15 11 55 40 18 1 4 3 44 71 03 61 96

35 Park came to pit road under green, crew went under hood and he's still slow, coming back to pits

Restart coming on lap 87. 88 is beneficiary, back to lead lap for him

35 pitting again for gas along with 12. 03 gets to catch up to the field after coming out of the pits on the last restart half a lap down. Running order: 15 11 18 40 61 55 4 3 44 1 16 96 7 39 01 80 38 14 52 03 2 71 99 63 35 12 21. 50 Peck going to garage on the hook

caution lap 82: 50 Peck got the outside wall in turn one, is stopped on backstretch with flat right front and body damage. Pitting: 71 35 12 99 30 2 63 24. 71 getting right tires along with 35

80 laps in: 15 11 71 18 40 61 55 4 3 44 1 35 12 99 16 96 21 7 2 39 01 38 50 14 63 52 03 yellow yellow yellow

15 Ickler got the lead from MacDonald on the outside in turn four after the restart

03 Lopez pitted out of 2nd place and will restart deep in the field with not all that many laps to run. But he'll have fresh right side tires. Restart lap 70, running order 71 15 11 35 3 18 99 40 12 61 55 4 161 21 7 44 2 24 80 50 38 52 96 14 01 39 24 88 63 04 etc etc

63 Salemi who got black flagged for passing before the restart point and had to serve a penalty is the beneficiary. pit: 44 30 27 01 96 88 80 39 38 14 50 2 52

caution lap 66: 26 Bouley spun in turn four but drove away.

lap 60: two horse race between 71 and 03. further back, 15 and 11 battle. Then 35, 3 18 99 12 40 44 61

the sun is shining and the racing is getting pretty dicey: 71 leads 03 15 11 35 3 99 12 18 40 44 61 96 16 80 88 4 39 21 38 55. 50 laps down, 75 to go

under yellow lap 39: 03 71 35 3 11 15 99 61 12 96 18 50 40 44 16 30. Restart lap 41

most of those who had not pitted under first caution pitted this time but not 03 Lopez. He holds the lead under caution followed by 71 35 3. 1 Bayne penalized for too many men over the wall

caution lap 35 - 8 Earnhardt crashed inside backstretch, gonna need a hook I believe. They say he got into the outside wall coming out of turn 2

restart on lap 26. Dillon is first car who had pitted, restarting 11th

pit stops for everyne but 40 1 03 44 30 39 80 16 38 01... interesting strategy. 14 Masessa is lucky dog

jinxed the race: caution lap 22, 59 Hamilton went up and thumped the wall in turn two. Drives to pit road with flat right front. Pitting is likely for a fuel stop.

clean and green through 20 laps: 40 3 71 35 1 18 03 8 4 99 11 44 etc

One to go. Next update will be under caution

41 on pit road, has been reporting engine troubles since practice. He's back, but at the back of the field along with 15 Ickler (backup car)

Field is rolling, three pace laps before turning them loose. Pit road speed has been lowered to 35 MPH due to damp spots.

Engines fired

6:26 p.m. - Sprint Cup qualifying is now over and we're probably very few minutes away from firing engines for the CWES race. The track looks good, the weather looks OK, though with the long day and waning sun we're probably looking at a race that could be over almost any time after halfway. We'll try to update while under caution so stay tuned.

5:47 p.m. - Sprint Cup qualifying has resumed with 21 cars still to take time. Once that's done, the Heluva Good! 125 will get the track. Car covers are coming off the East cars on pit road and drivers are milling about in uniform.

5:03 p.m. - The plan as of right now is to start the East Series race immediately after Cup qualifying. The track is, for the most part, dry, with just some attention needed where there is leakage from under the SAFER barriers high in the turns. things could be getting under way, Cup-wise, in mere minutes.

4:27 p.m. - While on my way to the new pressbox, the skies opened. It was a ten-minute downpour and now it's over, and with half of Cup qualifying done, track drying efforts are ongoing. Camping World racing will follow that unless we hear otherwise. Stay tuned.

3:42 p.m. - With weather possibly becoming a factor later this afternoon, the Camping World East Series race here at NHMS has been changed from a 5:10 p.m. start to 4:30. With that said, we're packing up here in the infield and are heading across the track to find our new pressbox. Updates? Could happen once we get there.

3:35 p.m. - I would be remiss if I didn't mention the series putting on a well-attended - by both drivers and race fans - autograph session at the Camping World location just outside the tunnel earlier this afternoon. We should also wish Marc Davis a happy birthday as he turned eighteen back on the 23rd of June.

3:15 p.m. - It's quiet time here at the Magic Mile. The drivers are getting their pre-race instructions where the biggest drama might be whether Steve Park or Matt Kobyluck raise the first question when the floor is opened up to the drivers. We're casting a wary eye towards the weather as Sprint Cup qualifying is going on now and remaining optimistic that we'll get a 5:10 p.m. green flag. We may do race updates under caution as the race goes on, but that's quite iffy as the media folks have been moved from what had been the pressbox atop the suites to their very own suite atop the grandstands. How our working space winds up looking remains to be seen. If we can set up a laptop without cauing too many headaches, we'll attempt to post updates in this space, otherwise the next thing you see here may be the quick & dirty finish after the race's completion.

11:10 a.m. - Practice results have been posted in their entirety Here.

10:45 a.m. - We scribbled down the practice results order and some of the speeds before they blanked the screen on us. What we have is linked Here, and it'll be updated when we get the printout.

10:17 a.m. - Practice has been completed here at the Magic Mile and we're awaiting times from the session to be delivered to us in the media center. There were some problems in practice, the biggest affecting Brian Ickler. He lost a water line late in the session and that caused him to slide up into the turn three wall. The damage wasn't too severe but the backup car has already been unloaded. Ickler will have to move to the rear of the field or the start of the race, driving a car he has no practice time in. Scott Bouley missed most of practice fighting an oil leak, while Charles Lewandoski's car was pushed to the garage after the session. He reports nothing serious aside from the new car blues and says he'll be fine to race, though he thinks it's more of a top-fifteen car instead of a top-five car.

7:50 a.m. Friday - We're back in action and it would be an understatement to say that the weather has improved somewhat since we left here last night. Bright sunshine has bathed the Magic Mile and teams are poring over their cars to get ready to hit the track in a hair more than half an hour for a ninety-minute practice session. We'll be out shooting while cars are on track so it might be tough to come back here and update if anyone has trouble, but we'll issue a report of the goings-on as we know them shortly after the session concludes as well as reporting practice times.

NHMS Calls Off Rest Of Day's Activities

Thursday 4:36 p.m. - Fred Neergaard just told us that there will be no more on-track activity on the Magic Mile due to persistent showers. Practice will be held tomorrow morning from 8:30-10 a.m. We're packing up and heading out, will check back when we arrive on the scene bright and early Friday morning.

4:15 p.m. - The Modifieds got some track time, but not much before the wet stuff showed up and has turned the track into an unraceable state. The waiting game begins anew.

3:45 p.m. - We now have a starting lineup which is posted Here. On the track, Whelen Modified Tour cars are practicing. They'll go for an hour and at approximately 4:30 p.m. the Camping World East cars will start their single practice session and go ninety minutes. Off the track, attention surrounds Charles Lewandoski's car which is having some cutting and welding done to its floor area somewhere around where the truck arms mount; speculation is not our strong suit, especially when it comes to mechanical bits, so we'll have to ask more knowledgeable people about it sometime down the road.

2:25 p.m. - We'll have a starting lineup posted as soon as we're 100% sure (this may be a first) about how everyone's going to line up. One question is whether Austin Dillon will start first or last, what with his being fielded by a brand new team that, theoretically, has zero owner points. There may have been a deal hatched with Andy Santerre Motorsports to keep the No. 3 atop those owner standings, though. As soon as we know, you'll know.

1:38 p.m. - Rain has stopped and track drying equipment has been dispatched to start preparing the track for practice.

1:20 p.m. - Word has come that qualifying for the Camping World Series has been cancelled and the field will be set by points standings. All 36 cars will start. The plan for the day concerns a window of clearing that is approaching. When that arrives, track drying will commence with a two-hour estimated time of completion for that. When the track is ready, the Whelen Modified Tour will practice, followed by Camping World practice. Modified time trials will round out the day - if they cannot get that in tonight, they will qualify Friday morning.

1:05 p.m. - No news to report, but I think the track should go up to the dozen or so people camped out under the suites at the top of the main grandstands and give them some sort of prize for sticking out the rain delay in what have to be pretty miserable conditions. We might think we're pretty hardcore fans ourselves, going to all these races and doing the work we do to take the stories and pictures to the web, but right now we're sitting in a pretty comfie (dry!) media center enjoying a free lunch and all the root beer we can drink. You guys out there in the stands, you have our respect.

12:35 p.m. - Practice should have started an hour ago and gone for another half-hour, but nothing's been on the track yet today. The rain continues and there hasn't even been an attempt to dry the track yet. We await a revised schedule but do not expect it anytime soon.

10:35 a.m. - The sprinkles are not enough to send everyone on pit road scurrying for shelter, but there is definitely the ominous feel of the wet stuff about to settle in over the Magic Mile. Radar shows green stuff going back to Saratoga Springs but we're hoping that the serious stuff will hold off until after some practice, which gets going at 11:30 a.m., can be run. In other news, Charles Lewandoski has moved from a top-ten threat to a top-five threat tomorrow as Paul Wolfe has been spotted in his garage spot. These two combined to start strong in 2006 before Wolfe was hired away to become a Busch Series crew chief in mid-season. We've also met Barney McRae's new driver. He and Joey Polewarczyk Jr. of Hudson, N.H. have hooked up and will start testing this coming week with an eye to making their season debut next time out at Thompson.

9:45 a.m. - NASCAR has provided us with an entry list, and it's posted Here.

9:20 a.m. Thursday - We've arrived safely and soundly in the inner sanctum of the NHMS Media Center where action - East Series-wise, at least - won't kick off for another 90 minutes or so. Initial reports of the entry list says 37 cars are here; we'll be outside shortly to verify and get details. Until then, there's not much to report so we're going to go find something to report on.
