Delaney Picks Up Season-Best Finish At Watkins Glen

Watkins Glen, NY (June 9, 2008): Dustin Delaney survived an outrageous green-white-checkered finish to post a 16th place finish in the NASCAR Camping World Series East 125 at Watkins Glen International road course Sunday afternoon. The finish was Delaney’s season-best in the young 2008 season.

“We just hung out there and didn’t really push things all day. We wanted things to come to us. The car is a little beat up but it was a half way decent day,” said Delaney. “The guys gave me a great car, and it was there all day for me.”

Delaney started the race from the 27th position after he spun during qualifying and put down a lap of 109.937 mph. Delaney maintained his position before opting to pit at lap eight.

“We were hoping that an early pit strategy would work out for us,” said Delaney. “But we got penalized for blending in too early. I forgot about that rule and obviously six or seven other guys did too. I wasn’t thinking about it. Coming on pit road under green isn’t the best thing, but this track is so big it’s not a day-ender.”

Delaney had worked his way up to 17th by the halfway mark when heavy rains halted the race for two hours. Back under green, Delaney and his No. 39 Delaney Infrastructure Chevrolet were on the move. He worked his way up to 15th by lap 34 and maintained that spot over the next several laps.

Two laps before the race’s scheduled conclusion, a caution came out and extended the distance to 55 laps. On the restart, Delaney got caught up in some contact on the track during the white flag lap.

“We definitely got hung up a little bit by it, but we made it through,” said Delaney of the incident. “Austin (Dillon) and I were in it. I’m not exactly sure what happened. I just know I was doing all I could to get out of it.”

Delaney only lost one position and took the checkers with a 16th place finish in his first outing at Watkins Glen.

“We were definitely satisfied with the finish,” he said. “This is our first time here and we’re getting better every week. That’s what it’s all about.”

The NASCAR Camping World Series East is off until June 27th when they head to New Hampshire Motor Speedway for the running of the Heluva Good!® Summer 125.
