Jeff Anton Takes Twelfth Place Finish From South Boston Speedway
In the time before leaving for South Boston, Anton discovered that the rear clip on his car was not square. The only way to fix it, he said, was to basically cut the car up and start with a new back half of the chassis. Such a major undertaking could not be accomplished before leaving for the southern Virginia oval, so the team compensated as best as they could and set out to have a good race at the shortest track on the East Series schedule. "We knew what we had to work with and we made progress with it throughout practice, but it was never was really right," he explained. "The plan was to go out there and stay out of trouble and run and hope things would work out." Starting near the tail of the field, Anton found that his ability to stay out of trouble would be the key to success, as there was plenty of trouble to avoid. More than a dozen caution flags flew over the course of 155 laps and, even in overtime, the race ended under caution. When the race was over, Anton had picked up fifteen positions from where he started, winding up twelfth. "In practice I knew that those guys were fast enough on fresh tires, but on old tires we were on about the same pace," he said. "Throughout the race we proved that we weren't getting beat by them. They were getting into the turns better than we were, because we were really free. "From running here last year, I knew that the further down on the yellow line you were, the better off the car would turn so I kept working on that. It worked out well in the long run and we made something decent out of this," Anton continued. With South Boston in the rear view mirror, Anton is now eagerly awaiting the next race on the schedule, a 125-mile roller-coaster ride around the road course at Watkins Glen International. Anton made his series debut there in 2004 and, after finishing third at the other road course on the East Series schedule, Lime Rock Park, last year, he's ready for more success turning both right and left. "We're really looking forward to going back to Watkins Glen," he said. "We're looking forward to getting back on a road course. I love road courses and I like Watkins Glen even better than I like Lime Rock. That was where I had my first NASCAR race and we ran well there, finishing fifteenth." |
