Trevor Battles Hard To Save A Top 10 Finish At Greenville After Charging Into The Top 5 Before Close Call That Sent Bayne Back To 15th
SERIES: NASCAR Camping World East Series EVENT: An American Revolution 150 Presented by Kevin Whittaker Chevrolet TRACK: Greenville Pickens Speedway / Greenville, S.C. DATE: April 19, 2008 The day began as a rainy mess with teams scratching their heads wondering if they would be headed back to Greenville next weekend or if Mother Nature would clear the skies and allow for some much anticipated racing. Trevor Bayne and his No.1 Dale Earnhrardt Inc. team were one of 39 teams in attendance hoping for the best. Mother Nature finally cooperated around 1:30pm allowing teams to get underway with the events schedule. Qualifying took place at 6pm were Trevor qualified his No.1 Dale Earnhradt Inc. Chevrolet in the 16th position as he awaited the start of the “An American Revolution 150”. With the anticipation of a making his first career start driving for DEI at hand, Trevor seemed confident and ready to take the wheel as he strapped into his No.1 DEI Chevrolet with teammates and family members showed their support in wishing the youngster luck. When the green flag waived, Trevor settled in much like the rest of the competition before beginning his march towards the front. “We kinda started behind the eight ball today qualifying in 16th spot so we knew we were going to have to race our way to the front but at the same time save our tires and that can be a task in itself,” stated Trevor after the race. The 17 year old sensation did just that, Trevor began slowly marching towards the front of the field after working the outside groove, a groove that he seemed to have been alone in using as he began marching through the field. “My car worked pretty good up there and it was easy to pass since everyone was bunched up on the bottom,” said Trevor. “I thought that running up there would help save our tires as well because I wasn’t having to use as much wheel through the corners.” Trevor used the high side and found himself inside the top 5 just prior to halfway as he was prepared to ride in position and save his tires until the closing laps. After halfway, Trevor found himself running in the 6th position when the third caution of the night waived on lap 81. The NASCAR Camping World Series has double file restarts thus setting Trevor up for an outside position restart. “Our expectations were to be inside the top ten by halfway but we made it into the top five so we though we were going to be pretty good,” said Trevor. “We had that double file restart and I got booted up the track going down into the corner and slid the tires for the next three laps after that. If you slide these tires at all with the track being so abrasive you pretty much kill them for the rest of the race and after that happened we lost like ten positions and dropped back to 15th. Trevor managed to hold on and battle back into the top ten as he took the checkered flag in the tenth spot. “When the race was over we saw that both of the outside tires had chords showing,” said a disappointed Trevor after the race. “I guess from running the outside lane the track didn’t have any rubber laid down up there which made it alot more abrasive than the lower groove and that probably fuzzed them pretty good to start with. We really felt like we had a top five car tonight we just didn’t have any tires under us there at the end.”
